Category: Main -> Competition Rules at Our Monthly Meetings

Question
·  What are the rules for the meeting competition?
·  How do I prepare images for the competition?
·  How are images judged?
·  What are the prizes?
·  Can I re-enter an image?

Answer
·  What are the rules for the meeting competition?

  • You must be a member of the club to participate in the judged meeting contest.
  • Members may enter up to a total of two images in the contest.
  • Images may be distributed between:
  1. Special
  2. Open
  • Special is a themed category and entries must conform to the current theme which can be found in both the upload gallery and in the 'Contest Categories' section of the website.
  • Digital images must be submitted online in the Upload for Meeting Competition galleries. There is one gallery for images to be entered in the Open category and one for images going into the current Theme category. Each uploaded image must be given a name/caption.
  • There is a deadline for the submission of digital images: 6:00 PM of the Saturday before the meeting.

·  How do I prepare images for the competition?

For best viewing when projected at meetings, images should be sized so that they are 1024 pixels on the longest side.

  • If your image editor allows it, pictures should be saved using sRGB (best for web display) for the Online competition and AdobeRGB (better for projection at meetings) for the Digital competition.
  • Remember that too much compression of .JPG images may result in pictures that are pixelated or lacking critical detail when viewed at larger sizes, such as when projected on the screen at meetings. So when saving to .JPG format choose a 'quality' (ie: compression) setting of at least 8 (high quality/low compression).
  • Uploaded images must include a title/caption.
An image may be disqualified from consideration in the special category and moved to the open category if, in the opinion of the judge(s), it does not fit the special category topic.

·  How are images judged?

The judge(s) will be asked to evaluate and comment upon each image based on three criteria:

  1. Impact/Subject
  2. Composition
  3. Technical Quality

The judge(s) will give each image a score from one (1) to ten (10) points, with (1) representing a poor, ten (10) a superior, and five (5) an average image.

The score will be used to determine the monthly competition winners will be accumulated for yearly point total competition.

There will be a First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention winners in each category.

·  What are the prizes?

First, second, third, and honorable mention ribbons will be given to the top scoring images. Winning images will be posted online and qualify for slide of the year competition.

Online winners will be displayed at the next meeting following the closure of the online competition. If the owner of the image is present, he or she will receive the appropriate ribbon.

·  Can I re-enter an image?

Yes, as long as the image has not won a ribbon. Once an image wins a ribbon it is no longer eligable for entry in the judged meeting competition.

Images that have won in the Meeting competition can still be entered in the Online competition, provided they have not won in that venue, they may also be used as part of a slideshow.
